They Can’t All Be Winners

Some things I wouldn’t call failures but I also don’t plan to ever make them again.

jamaican rice and peas

I’ve had a coconut rice and kidney bean dish at a couple of singings recently and it’s always delicious. I will get a second serving along with dessert. So I tried this recipe, with some modifications. It wasn’t BAD, but definitely not the way I wanted. And since I made it, I think it might be on of those things that’s better left to special occasions, like potlucks when someone else cooks.

black bean chorizo burger

I had been thinking about these chorizo black bean burgers for a while. I made them with some leftover chorizo (from what, I can’t remember) and a can of black beans. The flavor was good, maybe a little too rich, and they were too crumbly, falling apart in the pan and in the bun. I think they could use some egg, maybe more breadcrumbs. The picture above is C’s plate, with the melted cheese picked off the bun.

Ma po tofu is one of my fave “Chinese restaurant” dishes. I was attracted to this recipe because it’s so simple. But maybe it’s TOO simple. It could definitely use something, I think I read a recipe that included oyster sauce? Maybe next time…
